Little Minds...

I don’t even know how we ended up on the couch, but that’s where we were when we heard, “What doing daddy?” Followed quickly by, “Ama!”

Josh froze; his hand that was under my shirt pulled back from my breast as if he was suddenly burnt. I tried very hard not to laugh at the look on his face when he glanced at Jesse and then back at me but I couldn’t help myself.

Jesse was trying to get up on the couch with us but he kept falling when his leg slipped off the cushion. “Daddy help.”

Josh sighed; reluctantly moving off me and helping me sit up on the couch with him. “I thought you were sleeping.” He grabbed Jess under the arms and pulled him up on the couch. “You should be sleeping,” he told him.

Jesse smiled, “Bad dream daddy.” Then he turned to me and crawled onto my lap, snuggling close to me. “’lo Ama.”

“That was my plan,” Josh muttered, his hand ran through Jesse’s hair. “So what was the dream about?”

Jesse started to ramble on about the monsters he dreamt about, I wasn’t really following what he was saying, my mind was still on what was happening when Jesse interrupted. “Ama, you ‘fraid of monster?”

I glanced at Josh, who raised a questioning brow at me. “No,” I told Jess. “With your daddy here, I don’t think the monster will come after me.”

Jesse looked at his dad and then hugged me tight. “Monster ‘friad of daddy?”

I chuckled, “I would think so, your daddy would do all he could to stop anyone from hurting someone he loves.” Jesse stared up at me, like it was contemplating what I just said, then he crawled off my lap and over onto his dad’s; his little hands gripping hold of his dad’s arms. “Daddy I go sleep now, tay?”

Without saying a word, Josh slipped off the couch with Jess and disappeared around the corner. As I sat there alone of the couch, I felt left out. I know that I should’ve have but I had sort of hoped that they would’ve have asked me to join them. Don’t be silly, I tried to tell myself.

I was standing by the living room window when Josh came out of Jesse’s room. “What are you doing?” He asked as his arms slipped around my waist.

I pointed at the balcony, “I’m admiring the snowmen out there.”

Josh looked over my shoulder, “Hmm, I wonder how they got there.”

“What?” I turned in his arms and stared up at him, only to find him smiling. “They are cute and so tiny compared to normal snowmen.”

“Well I don’t think three normal sized snowmen can fit on my balcony.” Josh laughed, “I got ready to go out there and clean the snow off earlier. Jess asked me what I was doing when I headed for the door with a shovel, so I told him. His eyes grew wide and he just started to cry, saying he wanted to make snowmen like he did at Nana’s over Christmas.”

“So you ended up creating snowmen instead of shoveling?”

He shook his head, “Actually snow people.” He turned me around and pointed at the two that were really close together, “Apparently that’s me and you.”

I grinned, “And the little one in front of us? Jesse?” Josh didn’t say anything. “Josh?” I looked over my shoulder at him, his smile had faded. “Josh what’s wrong?”

He shook his head; his hand ran through his hair. “That’s what I thought too, but Jess said no.”

“Then where is Jess? And who is the little one?”

Josh looked down at me, “You know, I asked that too but he wouldn’t say anything, he told me he was cold and wanted to go inside.”

I glanced at the snowmen outside, what’s going on in Jesse’s head?
